Arlene A. Brunscheon, 95, of Sumner, died Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. George Volkert officiating. Burial will follow at Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township of rural Sumner. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumnerand for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
Arlene Anna, daughter of Louis and Anna (Meyer) Boderman was born March 24, 1923, in Leroy Township, rural Sumner. She was baptized April 29, 1923, by Rev. H. C. Reikowsky at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church-Spring Fountain and confirmed May 24, 1936, by Rev. Theodore C. Klatt at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. Arlene received her early education in the rural Sumner Country Schools prior to graduating from Sumner High School in 1940. Following graduation, she would receive her Teaching Certificate from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Arlene taught for two years at Dayton #4, Buck Creek. On June 15, 1943, she was united in marriage with Alvin Brunscheon with Rev. William Nagler officiating at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Bremer and Fayette County for many years. Alvin’s death occurred July 27, 1978, and Arlene remained on the farm in Fayette County until moving in to Sumner in her later years. She worked at Meadowbrook Country Club from 1981-1992. Arlene was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner where she served on the Ladies' Aid. She enjoyed embroidery, playing cards with neighbors and friends, dancing, fishing, bingo, bowling, but most especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Arlene lived her life by the Golden Rule; which her daughter’s can attest to, whenever they needed her, she was there. She also enjoyed her chickens and selling the eggs locally, although her family did not share the same enthusiasm.
Arlene is survived by her four daughters, Judy Caslavka, Connie (Jon) LaRue, Brenda (Allen) Winzenburg, and Lynnette (Keith) Larson all of Sumner; eight grandchildren, Scott (Melanie Householder) Caslavka of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Deborah (Rob) VanDerMolen of Grimes, Brian (Rochelle) Caslavka of Burnsville, Minnesota, Tim Tisue of West Salem, Wisconsin, Carrie (Jason Hall) LaRue of Altoona, Amy (Nathan) Chester of Plainfield, Wendy (Shane) Wentzel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Kyle (Rebecca) Larson of Sumner; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Matthias of Readlyn and Marjorie Brunscheon of Waverly.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alvin, she was preceded in death by her sister, Edna (Boderman) Ganske-Barnes; and one brother, Clarence Boderman.
